Institutional Structure
NextGen Privacy operates under a structured governance model designed to guarantee editorial independence, institutional accountability, and deep domain competence in technology ethics, digital rights, and youth data protection. Our newsroom is organized to ensure that journalistic reporting, technical software auditing, and policy analysis operate completely separate from administrative and philanthropic operations.
The newsroom is directed by the Editor-in-Chief, who holds sole and exclusive authority over all editorial assignments, investigative inquiries, article commissioning, headlines, and publication schedules. Senior editors possess proven legal, technical, and journalistic backgrounds in data protection law, software security, and education policy.
Publisher and Final Editorial Responsibility
The Publisher / Executive Director is legally and institutionally accountable for the stewardship of NextGen Privacy, ensuring compliance with statutory non-profit and media laws, securing operational resources, and defending the publication’s public-interest mission. The Publisher delegates all day-to-day journalistic decisions exclusively to the Editor-in-Chief.
Under the NextGen Privacy Editorial Charter, the Publisher is formally prohibited from interfering in newsroom reporting, directing the outcome of investigations, suppressing critical coverage of donor institutions or technology vendors, or altering regulatory analyses. Any dispute involving serious legal liability is resolved through a documented legal review that prioritizes public-interest reporting and factual truth.
Editorial Office
The editorial office manages daily news reporting, investigative projects, policy trackers, and technical explainers. Core leadership roles include:
Editor-in-Chief: Holds ultimate responsibility for editorial strategy, investigative standards, newsroom ethics, hiring, and final publication approvals.
Executive Editor, Policy & Legal Affairs: Oversees reporting on youth privacy legislation (COPPA, AADC, GDPR), FTC regulatory dockets, state attorney general enforcement, and judicial precedents.
Senior Editor, Technology & Youth Surveillance: Directs investigations into social media algorithmic recommender systems, mobile app tracking telemetry, age-assurance biometrics, and generative AI data ingestion.
Investigations Editor, EdTech & Public Systems: Leads in-depth investigative inquiries into classroom surveillance software, school board vendor contracts, automated proctoring tools, and student data commercialization.
Editorial Standards and Verification
NextGen Privacy maintains an independent standards and fact-checking desk that operates outside daily deadline pressures. This desk reviews complex investigative findings, technical packet inspection captures, statutory interpretations, and high-risk allegations prior to publication.
Standards editors independently verify primary source dockets, cross-examine technical testing methodologies, audit statistical claims, and ensure strict compliance with defamation and youth privacy safeguards.
Corrections and Reader Accountability
The Public Editor / Corrections Desk evaluates reader inquiries, formal factual correction requests, and public challenges regarding published copy. Operating with procedural independence, the desk evaluates correction requests objectively against primary evidence.
When a factual error is substantiated, the desk oversees the immediate publication of a visible correction note and updates our public Corrections Log in accordance with our Corrections and Updates Policy. Contact: corrections@nextgenprivacy.org.
Authors and Contributors
NextGen Privacy relies upon a dedicated team of staff correspondents, investigative fellows, privacy engineers, legal scholars, educators, and youth contributors across the globe.
All contributors must adhere to our Author and Contributor Standards. Contributors must verify their professional credentials, sign conflict-of-interest declarations, and disclose any outside funding. We enforce strict byline transparency and prohibit synthetic personas.
Guest Contribution Review
The Guest Submissions Committee reviews unsolicited op-eds, policy commentaries, and student research papers. The committee ensures that guest contributions enrich public debate through rigorous evidence and reasoned argument rather than commercial advocacy.
Guest submissions undergo our standard fact-checking and conflict review. Inquiries: contributors@nextgenprivacy.org.
Commercial Partnerships and Advertising
Our Commercial and Partnership Operations team manages institutional sponsorships, philanthropic grant reporting, and direct display advertising. This team operates under strict firewalls separating them from the editorial newsroom.
Commercial personnel have zero visibility into upcoming news coverage or investigative targets, and they are barred from promising favorable coverage or interview access to commercial partners. Contact: partnerships@nextgenprivacy.org.
Privacy and Data Governance
As an organization dedicated to privacy, NextGen Privacy holds its internal data processing to exemplary standards. Our Data Protection Officer (DPO) oversees newsroom compliance with GDPR, COPPA, and our internal data minimization protocols.
The DPO ensures reader privacy preservation, cookie compliance, and the security of sensitive source materials. Inquiries: privacy@nextgenprivacy.org.
Accessibility
Our Accessibility Coordinator ensures that the NextGen Privacy website, downloadable PDF policy briefs, and interactive data charts satisfy the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1 Level AA). Accessibility feedback: accessibility@nextgenprivacy.org.
Security and Vulnerability Reporting
The Information Security Officer (ISO) oversees digital infrastructure resilience, encryption protocols, secure communication channels, and our Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure program. PGP-encrypted security reports: security@nextgenprivacy.org.
